The Graduate School

The RNCM is a superb environment in which to pursue advanced studies in performance (including conducting), composition, musicology, music psychology, and music education.

The Graduate School offers courses at a variety of levels ranging from Postgraduate Teaching Diplomas, specialised vocational training programmes, the Master of Music degree and a new Master of Performance degree, to the two gold standard research degrees, Master of Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy as well as the RNCM’s flagship International Artist Diploma. Each of them is carefully tailored to prepare you for the specific goals of your chosen career path, whether it is to be a professional performer or composer, music educator, researcher, community artist or – like an increasing number of successful graduates – an all-round expert musician, working in a variety of different fields.

Entrants to the Graduate School will normally hold a first degree or equivalent (or, for some programmes, be of equivalent professional standing). This qualification need not be in music, but all candidates for performance programmes must be able to satisfy the College that they have already achieved an advanced standard of performance in their Principal Study discipline, and have the potential to develop further towards a professional level of attainment. Candidates for the degrees of Master of Music, Master of Performance, Master of Philosophy, and Doctor of Philosophy must be able to show that they have a sufficient level of academic experience and potential to fulfil the requirements of these awards. All Graduate School programmes, with the exception of the MPhil/PhD, are full-time modes of study.
